About This Tour
Three Days in Sri Lanka's Sacred Ancient Capital โ A Journey 2,500 Years in the Making
Anuradhapura is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and one of the most spiritually significant sites in all of Asia. Serving as the capital of ancient Ceylon for over 1,400 years โ from the 5th century BC until 1073 AD โ it was home to magnificent palaces, monastic complexes, towering dagobas, and sacred temples before the jungle reclaimed it all. Today, its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation protects a vast landscape of extraordinary monuments including the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi โ the oldest documented tree in human history, grown from a cutting of the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. This three-day private tour from Colombo takes you deep into the ancient hinterland of Sri Lanka’s north central province, combining the sacred city of Anuradhapura with surrounding sites including the jungle ruins of Ritigala, the wildlife of Wilpattu National Park, the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock, and the Dambulla Cave Temple โ all on a fully customised private itinerary tailored to your pace, interests, and schedule. Pricing is negotiable based on your group size, accommodation preferences, and chosen activities โ contact DS Travels directly to design your perfect three days.

Day Itinerary
Your Day, Step by Step
๐
DAY 1 โ Colombo to Anuradhapura
Your private driver collects you from your hotel for the drive north along the Mirigama Highway through Kurunegala. Lush countryside, quiet farmlands, and misty morning views accompany the approximately 3.5-hour journey. Relax, sleep, or chat with your driver about the ancient world you’re heading into.
Arrive in Anuradhapura and check in to your hotel or guesthouse. Freshen up and enjoy breakfast before beginning the day’s exploration of the sacred city. Your driver will recommend the best local spots for a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast.
Begin at the most sacred site in Sri Lanka โ the Sri Maha Bodhi, a living fig tree grown from a cutting brought from India in 288 BC. This is the oldest historically documented tree in the world, venerated by millions of Buddhist pilgrims. The surrounding sacred precinct is filled with shrines, offering flowers, and the sound of chanted prayers. Remove shoes and observe temple customs respectfully.
Two of the largest ancient structures ever built by humans. The Ruwanwelisaya โ the great white stupa โ stands 103 metres tall and was constructed by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BC. Nearby, the Jetavanaramaya once towered over 120 metres, making it the third tallest structure on earth in its day. Walk around both stupas and absorb the extraordinary scale of ancient Anuradhapura’s ambitions.
Visit the intimate and beautifully carved Isurumuniya rock temple, famous for its exquisite bas-relief carvings including the celebrated “Isurumuniya Lovers” sculpture. Nearby, the ancient royal pleasure gardens of Ranmasu Uyana feature ornate carved moonstone entrances and a mysterious star map etched into a rock face.
The vast ruins of the Abhayagiri Vihara โ once home to 5,000 monks and one of the largest monastic universities in the ancient world. The towering red-brick dagoba, the twin ponds, and the beautifully carved elephant wall give a vivid sense of the city’s former grandeur.
Return to your hotel for the evening. Stroll the quiet streets of modern Anuradhapura, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, and rest well for the full day ahead.
๐
DAY 2 โ Ritigala, Wilpattu Safari & Mihintale
Depart before sunrise for the one-hour drive to the base of Ritigala โ Sri Lanka’s most mysterious and least-visited ancient site.
Spend 1.5โ2 hours exploring the haunting ruins of the ancient forest monastery on Ritigala’s lower slopes. Stone-paved meditation paths wind through dense forest between collapsed meditation platforms, ponds, and structures built by the strictest ascetic monks of ancient Sri Lanka. The forest is completely silent except for birdsong and rustling leaves โ a profoundly atmospheric experience.
Drive to Wilpattu’s main entrance for a 3-hour jeep safari through Sri Lanka’s largest national park. Morning is the best time for leopard activity around the Villu lakes. Your experienced park guide knows the best routes and waterholes for wildlife encounters โ elephants, sloth bears, deer, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species may all be spotted.
Stop at a local restaurant near the park gate for a fresh Sri Lankan lunch (self-paid) before the afternoon drive.
Drive to the sacred hill of Mihintale โ the site where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka in 247 BC when the Indian monk Mahinda met King Devanampiya Tissa. Climb the 1,840 ancient granite steps to the summit for panoramic views and a series of ancient stupas, cave temples, and meditation halls perched among the rocks.
Return to Anuradhapura for your second night. Dinner at leisure โ your driver can recommend excellent local restaurants serving fresh rice and curry, seafood, and traditional Sri Lankan dishes.

DAY 3 โ Sigiriya, Dambulla & Return to Colombo
ย
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and check out, luggage loaded into the vehicle for the day’s journey south back towards Colombo via Sigiriya and Dambulla.
Begin the return route at Dambulla โ the magnificent rock-cut cave complex of five sanctuaries housing 157 gilded Buddha statues and 2,100 mยฒ of ancient Buddhist murals. Arrive early before coach tour groups and enjoy the caves in relative peace.
The iconic finale of the tour โ ascend the legendary 5th-century fortress of King Kashyapa, climbing approximately 1,200 steps past the famous Sigiriya Frescoes and Mirror Wall to the summit palace ruins with their extraordinary 360ยฐ views across the jungle plains. Allow 2โ2.5 hours including descent.
Enjoy lunch at a restaurant near Sigiriya or en route south (self-paid). A well-earned rest before the final drive to Colombo.
Begin the journey south along the highway. Depending on your departure point and traffic, Colombo drop-offs arrive between 6:30โ7:30 PM and Negombo between 7:00โ8:00 PM โ completing a rich and thoroughly rewarding three days in the ancient heart of Sri Lanka.
