Step 01Departure from Colombo / Negombo
Your private driver collects you from your hotel — time is negotiable to suit your schedule. Settle into the air-conditioned vehicle for the comfortable journey east into Sri Lanka’s lush hill country.

Step 02Breakfast Stop — Ambepussa
After about 90 minutes on the road, stop in the small town of Ambepussa for a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast (self-paid). Stretch your legs, try a plate of hoppers or string hoppers with coconut sambol, and enjoy the cool morning air before continuing uphill.

Step 03Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Spend 1–1.5 hours at Pinnawala — one of the most moving wildlife experiences in Asia. Watch the herd’s famous river bath, hand-feed the babies, and learn about the rescue and rehabilitation programme that has been protecting orphaned and injured elephants since 1975. Alternatively, visit the nearby Millennium Elephant Foundation for an even more intimate hands-on experience.

A 30-minute drive brings you to the fragrant spice gardens of Mawanella. A local guide walks you through the plantation, identifying cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, pepper, vanilla, and cardamom growing in their natural setting, and explaining how each spice is harvested and used in cooking and Ayurvedic medicine. Entry is free.

Step 05Sri Dalada Maligawa — Temple of the Sacred Tooth
Arrive in Kandy — the last royal capital of Sri Lanka — and enter the magnificent Sri Dalada Maligawa complex on the shores of Kandy Lake. This UNESCO World Heritage site houses one of Buddhism’s most precious relics: the left canine tooth of Gautama Buddha. Observe the elaborate ritual offerings, admire the gilded roof and intricate Kandyan architecture, and absorb the profound spiritual atmosphere that fills this extraordinary place.

Drive up to the hilltop Bahiravakanda Buddha — a serene 88-foot white seated statue towering above Kandy, with sweeping 360° views across the city, lake, and surrounding hills. Afterwards, visit a certified gem workshop to learn about Sri Lanka’s world-famous sapphire, ruby, and moonstone industry, with a guided demonstration of cutting, polishing, and setting.

Step 07Tea Factory Visit & Return to Colombo
Stop at a working tea factory in Pilimathalawa on the drive back — witness the full journey from freshly plucked green leaf through withering, rolling, fermenting, and drying to the finished product in your cup.
