About Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura — One of the Oldest Cities in the World

Anuradhapura is one of the great wonders of the ancient world — a city of almost unimaginable antiquity and spiritual significance that served as the royal and religious capital of Sri Lanka for over 1,400 years, from the 5th century BC until its abandonment in 1073 AD. At its height, Anuradhapura was one of the most sophisticated cities in South Asia — home to vast palace complexes, towering dagobas that ranked among the largest structures on earth, monastic universities housing thousands of monks, and an advanced hydraulic engineering system of irrigation tanks.

The city traces its origins to the 4th century BC. It reached its spiritual zenith in 288 BC when Princess Sanghamitta brought a sacred branch of the Bodhi tree from India — the tree under which Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. This branch grew into what is now the Sri Maha Bodhi — the oldest historically documented tree on earth, continuously tended by Buddhist monks for over 2,300 years.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, Anuradhapura today presents an extraordinary archaeological landscape. Unlike many ancient sites, it is still an active place of Buddhist pilgrimage — thousands of white-clad devotees visit the Sri Maha Bodhi daily, creating an atmosphere of living spirituality that no museum could replicate.

🌳 The Sri Maha Bodhi — The World's Oldest Documented Tree

The Sri Maha Bodhi is the single most venerated tree on earth — a sacred fig tree (Ficus religiosa) grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, under which Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. Brought to Sri Lanka in 288 BC by Princess Sanghamitta (daughter of the Indian Emperor Ashoka), it was planted in the Mahamegha Garden of Anuradhapura and has been continuously protected and tended by Buddhist monks ever since — making it the oldest plant in the world with a precisely documented planting date.

The tree stands on a specially constructed platform at the centre of the sacred precinct, surrounded by golden railings and festooned with prayer flags. The atmosphere — particularly at dawn or during full-moon Poya days — is profoundly moving, drawing pilgrims from across Sri Lanka and the Buddhist world.

What to See at Anuradhapura Ancient City

🏛️ Ruwanwelisaya — The Great White Stupa

The most iconic structure in Anuradhapura — a gleaming white dagoba 103 metres tall built by the great warrior-king Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BC. The Ruwanwelisaya (also called Mahathupa) was one of the tallest structures on earth when completed, ranking alongside the Great Pyramids. Walk the full circumambulation path around the base, past the elephants carved into the surrounding wall, as pilgrims have for 2,000 years.

🏛️ Jetavanaramaya — Once the Third Tallest Structure on Earth

The Jetavanaramaya dagoba once stood over 120 metres tall — making it the third tallest structure on earth in its day, surpassed only by two Egyptian pyramids. Built entirely of hand-made bricks in the 3rd century AD, it is estimated to contain enough bricks to build a 3-metre-high wall from London to Edinburgh. Even in its current reduced height of 71 metres it is a staggering engineering achievement.

🏛️ Abhayagiri Monastery — Home to 5,000 Monks

The Abhayagiri Vihara was one of the greatest monastic universities of the ancient world — at its peak housing over 5,000 Buddhist monks and welcoming scholars from China, India, and Southeast Asia. The complex includes a 75-metre dagoba, the famous twin ponds (Kuttam Pokuna), the carved elephant wall, and ruins of vast residential quarters scattered across several kilometres of forest.

🎨 Isurumuniya Rock Temple & Royal Gardens

A beautifully carved rock temple at the edge of a sacred tank, famous for its exquisite bas-relief sculptures — most notably the celebrated "Isurumuniya Lovers", a 5th-century carving of exceptional artistry. Nearby, the ancient royal pleasure garden of Ranmasu Uyana features ornate carved moonstone entrance slabs, bathing pavilions, and a mysterious star map etched into a rock face.

⛰️ Mihintale — The Birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka

Just 13 km east of Anuradhapura, the sacred hill of Mihintale is where Buddhism first arrived in Sri Lanka in 247 BC. Climb 1,840 ancient granite steps to the summit for sweeping views and a series of ancient stupas, cave temples, and a refectory carved from the living rock. Mihintale is a perfect half-day addition to any Anuradhapura visit.

Insider Tips for Your Visit

How to Get the Most from Your Anuradhapura Visit

🌅   Visit the Sri Maha Bodhi at Dawn — The Most Powerful Experience

The Sri Maha Bodhi at dawn is one of the most spiritually charged experiences in Sri Lanka. The 5:30 AM puja brings the first pilgrims of the day — monks chanting, incense smoke rising through the morning mist, and the ancient tree glowing in the soft early light. DS Travels' early departure from Colombo (5:30 AM) gets you there before 9:30 AM — still early enough for a calm, unhurried visit before the midday heat and tour groups arrive.

🗺️   Follow This Sequence for the Best Visit

The most efficient route: (1) Museum — 30 min; (2) Sri Maha Bodhi — 30–45 min; (3) Ruwanwelisaya — 30 min; (4) Thuparama — 15 min; (5) Abhayagiri & twin ponds — 45 min; (6) Jetavanaramaya — 30 min; (7) Isurumuniya & Ranmasu Uyana — 30 min. Total: approximately 4–5 hours by bicycle.

⛰️   Add Mihintale — It's Only 13 km Away and Worth It

Mihintale is one of Sri Lanka's most serene and underrated sacred sites — often skipped by day visitors who run out of time. The 1,840 granite steps to the summit take about 20–25 minutes to climb and the views over the surrounding forest and ancient tanks are extraordinary. Plan your Anuradhapura visit to include at least 1.5 hours at Mihintale — ideally in the late afternoon when the light is golden and the site is quiet.

🌿   Combine with Wilpattu National Park on the Same Day

Wilpattu National Park is just 30 km west of Anuradhapura — making an early morning Wilpattu safari followed by an afternoon at Anuradhapura one of the finest single-day itineraries in Sri Lanka. Leave Colombo at 5:30 AM, arrive at Wilpattu for the 6:00 AM gate opening for a 3-hour morning safari, then drive 30 minutes east to Anuradhapura for the afternoon.

🚗   Consider the 3-Day Tour — Anuradhapura Deserves More Than a Day

Anuradhapura is genuinely too rich and vast to experience properly in a single day. DS Travels' Anuradhapura 3-Day Hinterland Tour gives you two full days in the sacred city plus visits to Wilpattu, Mihintale, Ritigala, Sigiriya, and Dambulla at a pace that lets each site breathe.
