Sri Lanka 2-Week Itinerary for European Travellers

Two weeks is the sweet spot for Sri Lanka. Long enough for the Cultural Triangle, a safari, the Hill Country, and the south coast β€” but only if you route it correctly. This is the north-to-south sweep we plan for most European visitors, with honest drive times and no backtracking.

How to Think About This Itinerary Before You Start

πŸ“Œ This is a framework

Your interests matter. Wildlife obsessives might spend three days on safaris. Beach lovers might compress the Hill Country. What this itinerary won’t do is treat every site equally β€” some need more time and we’ve allocated based on what actually merits it.

πŸ›£οΈ Real drive times

A 150 km journey in Sri Lanka regularly takes 3.5–4 hours. Every section of this itinerary is planned around actual road times, not Google Maps estimates. Budget this in everywhere β€” it changes the whole day.

DAYS 1–2

Arrive and Orient in Negombo

Most European flights land 4:00–7:00 AM. Day 1 is a recovery day. Negombo β€” 10 minutes from arrivals β€” is the smarter choice over pushing through to Colombo. It’s a genuine beach town with a working fishing harbour.

πŸ’‘ Insider detail: The Negombo fish market at the lagoon is most active 6:30–9:30 AM. See the catch being sorted by hand on the dock with tuk-tuks loaded with ice waiting nearby β€” one of the most vivid sensory experiences of any arrival day in Sri Lanka.

DAYS 3–5

The Cultural Triangle

Base in Dambulla or Habarana β€” within 45 minutes of all three major sites. The sequencing is everything here.

Day 3

πŸ”οΈ Sigiriya + Dambulla

Leave 6:15 AM. Gate opens 7:00 AM. Dambulla closes 11:30 AM β€” arrive by 10:30 AM without exception. $30 + $10 entry.

Day 4

πŸ›οΈ Polonnaruwa

Start 7:30 AM. Hire bicycle at entrance (LKR 400). Gal Vihara + Rankot Vihara stupa (almost always empty). $25 entry.

Day 5

🐘 Minneriya (Optional)

Jun–Oct only: elephant gathering around the Tank. Hundreds of elephants. Afternoon safari, gates from 2:00 PM.

DAYS 6–7

Kandy β€” Temple, Tea & the Hill Country Train

Day 6 β€” Kandy

Temple of the Tooth: arrive before 10:00 AM for the 9:30 AM puja ceremony β€” drummers, incense, worshippers. $10 entry. Afternoon: Peradeniya Botanical Gardens (15 min from city) β€” 60 hectares of orchids and royal palms.

Day 7 β€” Kandy to Ella Train

Departs Kandy 8:47 AM (verify current schedule). 6 hours through tea estates and waterfalls. Book second-class reserved seats in advance. Sit right side facing direction of travel for best valley views.

DAYS 8–9

Ella and Horton Plains

Day 8 β€” Ella

Little Adam’s Peak: before 9:00 AM before clouds roll in. Nine Arch Bridge: afternoon, from the tea estate hillside above (not the road below). Trains cross at ~9:10 AM and 12:45 PM southbound.

Day 9 β€” Horton Plains

2,100 metres altitude β€” cold, bring a layer. 9 km circular trail to World’s End cliff. Arrive before 7:00 AM β€” cloud rolls in by 10:00–10:30 AM and World’s End disappears. $30 entry.

DAYS 10–11

Wildlife Safari β€” Yala or Udawalawe

From Ella, 2.5–3 hours to Yala via Wellawaya. The landscape changes dramatically β€” from lush green hills to dry flat scrubland.

πŸ† Yala β€” Best for Leopards

75–85% leopard sighting rate in dry season. Block 1, gate opens 6:00 AM. Always the morning session. Crowds are real in Jul–Sep but the wildlife is extraordinary.

🐘 Udawalawe β€” Best for Elephants

Year-round herds around the reservoir. Virtually guaranteed elephant encounter on any morning drive. The alternative if elephants matter more than leopards.

DAYS 12–13

South Coast β€” Galle Fort and the Beach

From Yala to Galle: 2 hours on the southern coastal highway. Galle Fort is the most intact colonial fortification in Asia β€” Dutch ramparts, boutique hotels, 400-year-old buildings with laundry between them.

Unawatuna

10 min from Galle Β· Sheltered Β· Calm Nov–Apr

Mirissa ⭐

40 min east Β· Most beautiful beach on south coast

Tangalle

1 hr east Β· Quietest Β· Most local feel

DAY 14

Depart Colombo

Most European flights depart late evening. A full day is yours β€” Colombo’s Dutch Hospital shopping precinct, a final meal, or time at your hotel. Southern Expressway from Galle: 2–2.5 hours to the airport (add 45 min on Friday evenings).

⚠️ Allow 3 hours before departure. Bandaranaike check-in queues for UK/EU flights are consistently long and the process is slower than most European airports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2 weeks enough for Sri Lanka as a European traveller?

Two weeks covers the major highlights without feeling rushed. To go deeper (longer in the Hill Country, multiple safari parks, east coast beaches) you’d want 17–21 days. Two weeks is the most common duration for European first visits and this itinerary is how we plan most of them.

What is the best time of year for a 2-week Sri Lanka itinerary from Europe?

January through March is the most reliable all-round window: south coast excellent, Hill Country dry, Cultural Triangle excellent, wildlife good. February and March add Wilpattu’s peak leopard season and thinning post-Christmas crowds. July–August is peak wildlife for Yala but the southwest is in its wet season.

How much does a 2-week Sri Lanka trip cost from Europe?

Flights from UK/Europe: Β£500–£900 return depending on season. Accommodation: $30–$200+/night. Day tours with DS Travels from $95 per tour (not per person). A comfortable mid-range two weeks including flights, accommodation, tours, food, and entry fees typically runs Β£2,000–£3,500 per person.

How should I get between cities on a 2-week itinerary?

For the Cultural Triangle and Kandy: private driver days work well. For Kandy to Ella: the train is the right choice β€” scenic and comfortable. For Yala and the south coast: private vehicle is more practical than public transport. We can arrange intercity transfers as standalone services connected to tour bookings.
