About This Tour
Turtles, Mangroves, Stilt Fishermen & a UNESCO Fort — All in One Day
This southern coastal day tour is one of Sri Lanka’s most varied and rewarding experiences. Start with a tranquil boat journey through the Madu Ganga — a UNESCO-designated mangrove wetland teeming with birds, monitor lizards, and cinnamon gardens. Visit a turtle hatchery where dedicated conservationists protect five endangered species, and if the timing is right, release a hatchling into the Indian Ocean yourself. Continue south along the coast to witness the extraordinary skill of Sri Lanka’s iconic stilt fishermen, perched on single poles above the surf. End the day inside the magnificent Galle Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where 400 years of Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial history meet boutique cafés, art galleries, and ocean-facing ramparts.

Day Itinerary
Your Day, Step by Step
Your private driver collects you from your hotel with a DS Travels name board. The air-conditioned drive south along the coastal expressway takes approximately one hour to Balapitiya — sit back and enjoy the early morning ocean views along the way.
Board a traditional wooden boat for a peaceful journey through the Madu Ganga — one of Sri Lanka’s most important wetland ecosystems. Wind through channels of towering mangroves, spot kingfishers, monitor lizards, and cormorants, and stop at a small cinnamon island to see how Sri Lanka’s famous spice is harvested and processed by hand.
Visit a dedicated sea turtle hatchery along the southern coast where five endangered species — including the Green, Hawksbill, and Leatherback — are protected and nursed to health. Learn about the conservation programme and, if timing allows, gently release a baby turtle into the Indian Ocean — a genuinely unforgettable moment.
Enjoy a relaxed lunch at a well-regarded local restaurant along the south coast, with fresh seafood and traditional Sri Lankan rice-and-curry dishes on the menu.
Witness one of Sri Lanka’s most photographed sights — fishermen perched on single wooden poles above the breaking surf, patiently waiting for the day’s catch in a tradition unique to this coastline. Afterwards, stop at the bustling Galle fish market to watch fishermen sell their fresh catch roadside in vivid, chaotic scenes.
Spend the afternoon inside this extraordinary 16th-century colonial fortress — the best-preserved sea fort in Asia. Stroll the broad ramparts with sweeping Indian Ocean views, explore Dutch-era streets lined with boutiques and galleries, visit the famous lighthouse and Dutch Reformed Church, and stop for coffee or a cold drink at one of the fort’s many charming cafés.
Begin the journey back north along the expressway. Drop-offs at Colombo and Negombo hotels arrive between 7:00–8:00 PM — the perfect close to a day of coast, culture, and conservation.
