About This Tour

Four Extraordinary Sites. One Epic Day. The Ultimate Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle Journey.

This is the most ambitious and rewarding day tour DS Travels offers — a sweeping journey through the very heart of Sri Lanka’s ancient Cultural Triangle that covers four extraordinary sites in a single day. Begin at Ritigala, a haunting jungle mountain rising 766 metres above the northern plains, where the ruins of a 2,000-year-old forest monastery are swallowed by dense rainforest — one of the least-visited and most mysterious archaeological sites in the country. Continue to the magnificent medieval capital of Polonnaruwa, built by King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, including the iconic Gal Vihara rock temple. Add an optional wildlife jeep safari through the park before ascending the legendary Sigiriya Lion Rock — a 5th-century palace fortress rising from the jungle canopy — and closing the day at the UNESCO-listed Dambulla Cave Temple with its 157 gilded statues and 2,100 m² of ancient murals. This tour is designed for travellers who want to experience the very best of Sri Lanka’s north central heritage in one extraordinary, expertly guided day.

Tour Highlights
🌿️
Ritigala Jungle Mountain

Sri Lanka’s most mysterious archaeological site — a 766-metre sacred mountain shrouded in forest, concealing the ruins of a 2,000-year-old forest monastery used by ascetic Buddhist monks, barely touched by tourism.

🏛️
Polonnaruwa Ancient Capital

Explore the magnificent 12th-century royal city of King Parakramabahu I — the Royal Palace, Rankot Vihara dagoba, the Vatadage, and the breathtaking Gal Vihara rock temple with its four giant Buddha carvings.

🐘
Optional Wildlife Safari

Between Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya, take an optional jeep safari through the national park for a chance to spot elephants, deer, and birds in the wild scrub forest of the Cultural Triangle.

🏔️
Sigiriya Lion Rock

Ascend the world-famous 5th-century fortress — past the Sigiriya Frescoes, the ancient Mirror Wall, and through the Lion’s Paws gateway — to a summit with 360° views that will take your breath away.

🛕
Dambulla Cave Temple

Five ancient cave sanctuaries adorned with 2,100 m² of priceless Buddhist murals and 157 gilded statues, carved into a 160-metre high rock face — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991.

Your Day, Step by Step

5:30 AM

Step 01Early Departure from Anuradhapura

Your private driver collects you from your Anuradhapura accommodation before sunrise — an early start is essential to cover all four major sites comfortably across the day. The drive east towards Ritigala takes approximately one hour through quiet, misty countryside.

Step 02Ritigala Forest Monastery — Sunrise Exploration

Arrive at the base of Ritigala Mountain as the forest awakens. This is one of Sri Lanka’s most atmospheric and least-visited archaeological sites — the ruins of a vast forest monastery built by ascetic monks who sought complete isolation from the world. Walk the ancient paved meditation paths, stand among moss-covered meditation platforms and stone terraces, and feel the extraordinary silence of a place that few tourists ever reach. The surrounding forest is also rich in endemic plants and birdlife. Allow 1.5–2 hours.

Step 03Polonnaruwa Ancient City

Drive to Polonnaruwa — the magnificent 12th-century royal capital of Sri Lanka. Begin at the Archaeological Museum before entering the vast site to explore the towering Rankot Vihara, the Royal Palace and Audience Hall, the elegant Lotus Bath, the circular Vatadage relic shrine, and the ruins of the ancient Council Chamber. Allow 1.5–2 hours to explore the full complex.

Step 04Gal Vihara Rock Temple

The unmissable highlight of Polonnaruwa — four colossal Buddha figures carved directly into a single granite cliff face by King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. The 15-metre reclining figure, the towering 7-metre standing Buddha, and two seated figures are masterpieces of ancient Sri Lankan sculpture, radiating extraordinary peace and artistic precision.

Step 05Lunch & Optional Wildlife Safari

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant near Polonnaruwa or en route to Sigiriya (self-paid). After lunch, guests who have pre-booked the optional jeep safari can take a 2-hour drive through the surrounding national park, with opportunities to spot elephants, spotted deer, crocodiles, and the region’s diverse birdlife from an open-top jeep.

Step 06Sigiriya Lion Rock Climb

Arrive at the base of Sigiriya — the 5th-century royal fortress of King Kashyapa built on the summit of a volcanic monolith rising 349 metres above the jungle. Ascend approximately 1,200 steps, pausing at the famous Sigiriya Frescoes — ancient paintings of celestial maidens — and the polished Mirror Wall inscribed with 8th-century graffiti, before passing through the colossal carved Lion’s Paws gateway to the summit palace ruins. The panoramic views are absolutely spectacular. Allow 2–2.5 hours.

Step 07Dambulla Cave Temple

A short 20-minute drive from Sigiriya brings you to the Dambulla Cave Temple — the perfect final site as late afternoon light fills the caves with a golden glow. Five rock-cut sanctuaries hold 157 gilded Buddha statues and over 2,100 m² of immaculately preserved ancient murals across the ceilings and walls. The views from the base of the rock over the surrounding plains are magnificent.
